        活性炭介質的表現形式多為粉狀、粒狀、丸狀和蜂窩塊狀。主要成份為炭,還含有少量氧、氫、硫、氮、氯。也具有石墨那樣的精細結構,只有晶粒較小,層層不規則堆積。具有較大的表面積(50-100m2/克),有很強的吸附能力,能在它的表面上吸附氣體,液體膠態固體,對于氣、液的吸附可接近于活性炭本身的質量的。
       其吸附作用是具有選擇性,非極性物質比極性物質更易于吸附。在同一系列物質中,沸點越高的物質越容易被吸附,壓越大、溫度越低,濃度越高,吸附量越大,反之,減壓、升溫有利氣體的解吸。
       活性炭常用于氣體的吸附、分離和提純、溶劑的回收、糖液、油脂、甘油、藥物的脫色劑,飲用水或冰箱的除臭劑,防毒面具的濾毒劑, 還可用作催化劑或金屬鹽催化劑的載體。
